Emily Summers - 2024 CARRIE WILSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

|
2024 application period is closed. Check back in Spring 2025.
Carrie R. Wilson was a staple of the community of San Diego for the last 50+ years. Carrie believed in community inspiration through direct and intentional action. Pelecanus would never have come to fruition without Carrie, and the same can be said for so many people throughout San Diego. As the Dean of Students of the University of San Diego Law School, she was able to make a lasting impact on hundreds, if not thousands, of students' lives. Carrie asked us to let anyone looking to honor her memory know that she hopes they would make a "heartfelt gift to make the world a better place." She simply hoped for her legacy to be one of paying it forward.
We aim to award this scholarship to students who embody the Pelecanus mission of demonstrating optimism through science and align with Carrie R. Wilson’s passion for education, charity and service. $2,000 will be awarded to one student at the start of each academic year, who is actively enrolled in a Project Dragonfly graduate academic program. The applicant must be a student in good standing with their academic institution, and have completed a minimum of 3 credit hours. We welcome and encourage applications from candidates who contribute to growing diversity within the conservation sector. For example, people of color, people with disabilities, and people of diverse sexual orientations, gender expressions and identities are strongly encouraged to apply. We will ask that scholarship recipient be available for a podcast interview to be published by Pelecanus. Priority will also be given to students who demonstrate financial need

Carrie r wilson memorial internship
Pelecanus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, made up of conservation professionals, focused on the movement that is and has been happening in the conservation field. We publish four podcasts. One is a long-form documentary style show that highlights the people and organizations that are making it their purpose to grow the conservation field and to show how people have, and still are making monumental differences in our world with intentional change. The second is a twice-monthly short-form podcast that highlights the recent news stories that exemplify this type of change. The third podcast called The Possibilists is a collaboration with Reverse the Red to spotlight the conservationists working with a "possibilistic" attitude of solutions-based efforts to tackle the world's critical environmental struggles, and the final series is Pelecanus Deep Dives, where we dive deep into a Pelecanus news article and learn more about the topic highlighted.
We promote independent thinking and afford unique opportunities for motivated individuals. We are committed to encouraging students to pursue their interest in the conservation sciences by providing opportunities for exposure to a scientific-focused culture and unique professional experiences to augment the voice of conservation through a variety of media platforms. In addition, the internship program will allow the interns to grow both professionally and personally through interactions with conservation professionals, providing a platform to gain greater professional exposure to the broader community and network with established leaders in the field of conservation. Our Intern Program offers current students (both undergrad and graduate students) and recent grads (within one year of graduation) an opportunity to work and learn in a variety of settings to supplement classroom instruction.

We are currently seeking an unpaid intern to assist in our outreach and marketing initiatives to increase the reach of our content to new audiences and engage the community. The intern, working remotely, will also have the opportunity to provide creative inputs to shape/define the Pelecanus brand through graphic design projects and will also assist with the development of data-driven advertising initiatives.
